Beda Abbas dan Haniyah
Banyak perbedaan yang mencolok dari kedua tokoh ini. Sebagai sesama orang Palestina kedua tokoh ini berbeda jalan dalam memperjuangkan kemerdekaan Palestina.

Seperti pendahulunya Yasir Arafat, Mahmud Abbas lebih memilih jalan ‘damai’ dengan Zionis Israel yang jelas-jelas dan nyata merampok negeri Palestina. Bagi Abbas dan PLO nya - lebih baik sedikit daripada tidak sama sekali untuk mendapatkan tanah Palestina. Maka jalan diplomasi, perundingan dan perjanjian damai dengan pihak Israel lebih sering dilakukan oleh Abbas dan PLO. (Baca Siapa sebenarnya Mahmud Abbas?)

Berbeda dengan Abbas, Ismail Haniyah yang merupakan pemimpin Hamas dan juga merupakan Perdana Mentri yang resmi dipilih oleh rakyat Palestina - lebih memilih jalan ‘perang’ dengan Zionis Israel. Roket-roket dari brigade Izzuddin Al-Qassam yang merupakan sayap militer Hamas secara rutin meluncur ke kawasan Israel.

Abbas lebih suka cipika cipiki dengan Condileeza Rice yang bukan mahramnya.

Haniyah lebih memilih memeluk dan mencium anak Palestina.

Abbas malah memeluk tentara Zionis Israel yang telah nyata membantai rakyat Palestina.

Mencium Hajar Aswad lebih mulia daripada memeluk dan mencium pipi tentara teroris Israel.

Ketawa akrab dengan Simon Peres dan saling memberi masukan dilakukan Abbas.

Haniyah bergaul dan meminta nasihat Ulama Syaikh Ahmad Yassin.

Pope rehabilitates Holocaust denier, angering Jews

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict rehabilitated on Saturday a traditionalist bishop who denies the Holocaust, despite warnings from Jewish leaders that it would seriously harm Catholic-Jewish relations and foment anti-Semitism.

The Vatican said the pope issued a decree lifting the excommunication of four traditionalist bishops who were thrown out of the Roman Catholic Church in 1988 for being ordained without Vatican permission.

The four bishops lead the ultra-conservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), which has about 600,000 members and rejected modernizations of Roman Catholic worship and doctrine.

The Vatican said the excommunications were lifted after the bishops affirmed their willingness to accept Church teachings and papal authority.

In healing a 20-year-old schism that had wounded the Catholic Church, the decree looks set to spark one of the most serious crises in Catholic-Jewish relations in 50 years.

"We have no intention of interfering in the internal workings of the Catholic Church, however, the eagerness to bring a Holocaust denier back into the Church will cast a shadow on relations between Jews and the Catholic Church," Israel's ambassador to the Vatican Mordechai Lewy, told Reuters.

One of the four bishops, the British-born Richard Williamson, has made a number of statements denying the full extent of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews, as accepted by mainstream historians.

In comments to Swedish television broadcast on Wednesday, he said "I believe there were no gas chambers" and only up to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps, instead of 6 million.

Williamson said: "I believe that the historical evidence is hugely against 6 million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler."

Israel-based Rabbi David Rosen, head of inter-religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, told Reuters:.

"The late Pope John Paul II called anti-Semitism a sin against God and man. The denial of the overwhelmingly detailed documentation of the Shoah is anti-Semitism at its most blatant.

"In welcoming an open Holocaust denier into the Catholic Church without any recantation on his part, the Vatican has made a mockery of John Paul II's moving and impressive repudiation and condemnation of anti-Semitism," he said.

VATICAN DEFENDS DECREE

Asked about Williamson's comments, chief Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said they were "totally extraneous" to the lifting of the excommunications.

"This act regards the lifting of the excommunications, period," Lombardi told reporters.

"It has nothing to do with the personal opinions of a person, which are open to criticism, but are not pertinent to this decree."

Elan Steinberg, vice president of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants, told Reuters: "At a time when the Vatican should have sided with the victims it acted instead to desecrate their memory.

"This was an act of moral debasement unworthy of a moral institution. For this Vatican political expediency trumps ethical and human considerations," he said.

Catholic-Jewish relations were already severely strained over the figure of wartime Pope Pius XII, who Jews have accused of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust. Jews have asked the Vatican, which denies the charges, to freeze the procedure that can lead to his sainthood pending more study of wartime records.

Pope Benedict has already made several gestures of reconciliation to the schismatic group, including allowing the unconditional return of the old-style Latin Mass.

That move also angered Jews because the ceremony includes a Good Friday prayer for their conversion.

History did not begin with the Qassam rockets. But for us, the Israelis, history always begins when the Palestinians hurt us, and then the pain is completely decontextualized. We think that if we cause the Palestinians much greater pain, they will finally learn their lesson. Some term this "achievement." Nevertheless, the "lesson" remains abstract for most Israelis. The Israeli media prescribes a strict low-information, low-truth diet for its consumers, one rich in generals and their ilk. It is modest, and does not boast of our achievements: the slain children and the bodies rotting under the ruins, the wounded who bleed to death because our soldiers shoot at the ambulance crews, the little girls whose legs were amputated due to horrible wounds caused by various types of weaponry, the devastated fathers shedding bitter tears, the residential neighborhoods that have been obliterated, the terrible burns caused by white phosphorus, and the mini-transfer - the tens of thousands of people who have been expelled from their homes, and are still being expelled at this very minute, ordered to cram into a built-up area that is constantly growing smaller and is also under sentence of incessant bombing and shelling. Ever since the Palestinian Authority was established, the Israeli public relations machinery has exaggerated the danger of the military threat that the Palestinians pose to us. When they moved from stones to rifles and from Molotov cocktails to suicide bombings, from roadside bombs to Qassams and from Qassams to Grads, and from the PLO to Hamas, we said with a whoop of victory, "We told you. They're anti-Semites." And therefore, we have the right to go on a rampage. What enabled Israel's military rampage - the proper words to describe it cannot be found in my dictionary - was the step-by-step isolation of the Gaza Strip. The isolation turned Gaza's residents into abstract objects, with no names and addresses, except the addresses of the armed men, and no history, aside from the dates determined by the Shin Bet security service. The siege of Gaza did not begin when Hamas seized control of the Strip's security organs, or when Gilad Shalit was taken captive, or when Hamas was elected in democratic elections. The siege began in 1991 - before the suicide bombings. And since then, it has only become more sophisticated, reaching its peak in 2005. The Israeli public relations machinery happily presented the disengagement as the end of the occupation, in brazen disregard of the facts. The isolation and closure were presented as military necessities. But we are big boys and girls, and we know that "military necessities" and consistent lies serve state goals. Israel's goal was to thwart the two-state solution, which the world had expected to materialize once the Cold War ended in 1990. This was not a perfect solution, but the Palestinians were ready for it then. Gaza is not a military power that attacked its tiny, peace-loving neighbor, Israel. Gaza is a territory that Israel occupied in 1967, along with the West Bank. Its residents are part of the Palestinian people, which lost its land and its homeland in 1948. In 1993, Israel had a one-time golden opportunity to prove to the world that what people say about us is untrue - that it is not by nature a colonialist state. That the expulsion of a nation from its land, the expulsion of people from their houses and the robbery of Palestinian land for the sake of settling Jews are not the basis and essence of its existence. In the 1990s, Israel had a chance to prove that 1948 is not its paradigm. But it missed this opportunity. Instead, it merely perfected its techniques for robbing land and expelling people from their houses, and forced the Palestinians into isolated enclaves. And now, during these dark days, Israel is proving that 1948 never ended.

Mereka itu anti Yahudi.” Dan karena itu, kita berhak untuk bersikap buas.

Hal yang membuat militer Israel mampu melakukan kebuasannya –kata yang tepat tak saya temukan di kamus saya- adalah isolasi step-by-step Jalur Gaza. Isolasi itu membuat penduduk Gaza menjadi objek yang abstrak, tanpa nama dan alamat -selain alamat orang-orang bersenjata, dan tanpa sejarah sejak hari yang ditetapkan oleh agen keamanan Shin Bet.

Pengepungan Gaza tidak dimulai ketika Hamas menguasai organ keamanan di sana, atau ketika Gilad Shalit ditawan, atau ketika Hamas terpilih dalam pemilu demokratis. Pengepungan itu dimulai th 1991-sebelum ternjadi bom bunuh diri. Dan sejak itu, proses pengepungan menajdi semakin canggih dan mencapai puncaknya tahun 2005.

Mesin PR Israel dengan gembira menampilkan proses penarikan pasukan [thn 2005] sebagai berakhirnya pendudukan, tanpa tahu malu menutupi fakta sesungguhnya. Isolasi dan penutupan [Gaza] disebut-sebut sebagai ‘keperluan militer’. Tapi kita adalah gadis dan bujang yang sudah besar, dan kita paham bahwa ‘keperluan militer’ dan kebohongan yang terus-menerus itu demi mecapai tujuan negara. Tujuan Israel adalah untuk menggagalkan ‘solusi dua negara’ yang diharapkan dunia sejak Perang Dingin berakhir tahun 1990. Ini bukanlah solusi yang sempurna, tapi orang Palestina akhirnya bersedia menerimanya.
